Dispersal and/vs Vicariance & Areas of Endemism

G.F. Guala

Endemic is generally interpreted to mean "found nowhere else".
Areas of Endemism are the areas of highest endemism (the highest proportion or number of endemic species) in a group, sometimes they are interpreted as centers of origin as well but we have already seen why that might not be the case.

Centers of Diversity are the areas with the highest (usually species) diversity in a group.

widespread species vs. narrow endemics and relative distributions.

Extinction vs. Dispersal

Now remember that we are really looking at habitat plates, not areas. Note: this is a different emphasis than your book.

You can see that rapid radiations

can form both centers of diversity and centers of endemism.

However, widespread species and environmental gradients (such as latitude) can change this and often do.
